We are the Champion! (most probably)

Manchester United won Chelsea by 2:1 on Sunday at Old Trafford , which made them 1 point away from their 19th EPL title. Hernandez scored after 37seconds of the start with the assist from Park. It was his 20th goal of his first season in Manchester United. He has been playing well throughout the whole season. Vidic headed in the second goal assisted by Giggs to seal the game.
Giggs and Carrick were selected to be the most valuable player of the match. Carrick has done a great job to keep the possession of the mid-field for the United, and I am looking forward to his performance against Barcelona  in the Champion Cup. Besides Giggs and Carrick, I think Park has played a great game too. His great passes and energy contributed a major part of the United's victory. He is definitely the best Asian soccer player in the world!

Farewell to Phil Jackson?

"All of my hopes and aspirations are that this is the final game that I will coach," Jackson told reporters after his Lakers were swept from the playoffs in a crushing 122-86 defeat to the Mavericks. Phil Jackson, who led the Chicago Bulls to six championships in the 1990s, and the Lakers to five since, the 65-year-old head coach is going retire after this season. What a pity that he can't win one more Final Champion before his retirement. The Lakers was swept away by the Mavericks with an embarrassing 4-0 in the semi-final.
Regardless of the loss, I am considering not to support Lakers in the future, because they didn't only lose the game, but also their sportsmanship. Artest and Bynum were ejected during Game 2 and Game 3 respectively due to their flagrant foul against JJ Barea, Maverick's PG. I am so disappointed by their actions. Hey! We can Lakers, we can lose a game but we don't lose our sportsmanship! Just try harder next year and don't play the dirty fouls!

Bye Osama Bin Laden!

According to Bloomberg, Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan yesterday in a firefight with a team of U.S. operatives who raided the compound where he had been hiding, President Barack Obama said.
Aside from this good news, I found some joke about the death of Laden outdoes the royal wedding.

Moreover, someone even relate Iphone to Laden's death.  A few days before Laden's news, people found that Iphone can track user's location. So, someone says that maybe Laden exposed his location when using Iphone, and Steve Jobs is the hero in this case.
Don't take it serious! Just joking!

To Manchester United.

Today, the Manchester United lost to Arsenal by 0:1. I consider this match as one of the most important match for the United this season. Before this match, the United only need to get 7 points in the remaining 4 matches to be the champion. However, we lost 3 points on Arsenal, and in contrast Chelsea took 3 points from Hot Spur. So, Manchester United is now only leading Chelsea by 3 points. Players of Manchester United, do you still remember the pain that we lost the title to Chelsea by 1 point last season? If you remember it, then please show your determination to all the United's fans.To Sir Ferguson, please don't try your "new" tactics now, and make sure you can get the championship. Fight On Manchester United!

NBA 2011 Playoff Update!

My prediction for the Western Conference:

MEM vs OKC
Although MEM eliminated Spurs, no.1 in the regular season, I think OKC will over MEN by 4-1.  OKC is such a strong team after their trade with Celtics. They have two-time scoring champion Durant, dynamic point guard Russell Westbrook, imposing shot blocker Serge Ibaka and a solid defensive presence in the middle, Kendrick Perkins. So, I think OKC definitely will win in the second round or even can get into the NBA Final.

DAL vs LAL
Lakers came away from the first round with a respect for feisty Chris Paul in six games. The Lakers now are daring Dirk Nowitzki to be even more dominant and lead the Dallas Mavericks past the Lakers in the second round. "Big challenge for Pau (Gasol)," Kobe Bryant said Saturday about the respective European-born power forwards, noting there is no one with Nowitzki's varied repertoire on offense to go with his size. With the threats of Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Jason Terry, I can see it will be a tough series for Lakers. However, I think Lakers will over Dallas and get into the Western Final. My prediction is 4-2 Lakers win.

Acting + Soccer = Perfect Match!

"Glory" to Barcelona for winning Real Madrid in the Champions League Semi Final yesterday. The scored two goal in the second half after the Real Madrid defender PePe was sent off. Barcelona didn't only win with their soccer skill, but also their acting skill!
This was what happened in yesterday's game. Are you kidding me? Where are your dignities players of Barcelona? Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand talked about this on his twitter too. Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "This diving is a joke/embarrassing. When Pedro watches that do you think he’ll think 'What was I doing!? Rugby players must laugh at football." Regarding the Pepe-Alves incident, the England international centre-back added: "If you ever see me go off on a stretcher then run back on to play, I give everyone on here the green light to hit me with a two-footed tackle."
Shame on you Barcelona!

Lakers Leads 3-2!!

Kobe dropped 19 points with his sprained left ankle led to the Lakers' win over Hornets. Kobe sprained his left ankle in the last game against the Hornet, but he proved a sprained ankle is a minor impediment to him with the two impressive jams in tonight's game. Andrew Bynum had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Pau Gasol added 16 points, and the Lakers finally pushed the Hornets to the brink of first-round playoff elimination with a 106-90 victory tonight, taking a 3-2 series lead.

Bryant's second-quarter dunk on Okafor could turn out to be the Lakers' signature moment of a taxing first-round series that began with a stunning Game 1 loss. That's exactly what Bryant was trying to achieve when he picked up his dribble with two hands and threw down a right-handed slam right in Okafor's mug...

Manchester United 2- 0 Schalke 04

Manchester United beats Schalke 04 by 2:0 yesterday in the first round of the Champions League semi-final. Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, a reported United target, played well in the one sided game.
GAME STATS
8 Shots 17
5 Shots On Target 10
5 Saves 5
3 Corners 6
0 Offsides 4
10 Goalkicks 5
12 Fouls (Committed) 15
8 Throws 13
35 Ball Possession 65

The United actually had a few chances to score in the first half, but Neuer tried his best to keep a clean sheet in the first half. Despite his great performance, Giggs found the net 22 minutes into the second half, and Wayne Rooney scored another for the United two minutes later.

It was a performance that made the difference between a rout and a reasonable final score. It embraced another milestone from the astonishing Giggs because he, adapting his game to use his brain rather than doing the running he once could, became the oldest man to score in the Champions League...

Oops

Real Madrid have won the Spanish Cup but the celebrations went awry when Sergio Ramos dropped the trophy from the roof of a open topped bus which then ran it over. Cristiano Ronaldo headed the winner in extra time to beat the club’s biggest rivals Barcelona 1-0. It’s Madrid’s first major trophy in three years, and the first time they’ve won the Copa del Rey since 1993….
And...this is what happened...

The brace saved Bynum an the Lakers!

Bynum's  history of knee problems, which caused him to miss the 2008 playoffs and play limited minutes the past two postseasons, has made the device around his right knee a necessity.
The brace saved Bynum's knee when he fell awkwardly after stepping on the foot of San Antonio Spurs forward DeJuan Blair during the penultimate game of the regular season.
The brace came into play again early in the third quarter Friday night, when Bynum fell after getting tangled up with Hornets forward Carl Landry. Bynum stayed on the floor for nearly a minute, forcing the Lakers to call a timeout and tend to him. But he rose soon after Lakers trainer Gary Vitti came to check on him, and he continued to play.

What would happen to Lakers and Bynum if the powerful brace disappered??? I would say, Good Luck! So, Lakers fans, Let's salute to the brace!!!!

Actually, I didn't notice there were earthquakes happened in California until I saw my friend's status on Facebook. So, I started to search news about earthquakes in California on Google again (I have posted a post in March about a prediction of big shake in California, and luckily the prediction is wrong). Then, I found an article on sfexaminer.com called "Earthquake predictor forecasts another California temblor". Seems like we are not going to have a big earthquake in the near future! Thank God!

Surprising Loss in the first Playoff game...

Despite Kobe Bryant scored 34 points in Game 1 of the 2011 NBA Playoffs for the Los Angeles Lakers against the New Orleans Hornets, the Hornets won the game and stole the home court advantage of Lakers. With Chris Paul's 33 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds, flawlessly leading the Hornets down the stretch of a 109-100 victor.I watched this game on Sunday, and it is no doubt that the Hornet played a better game than the Lakers.

Bye treble...

Manchester City ended Manchester United's of winning the treble in the FA Cup Semi Final last Saturday by 1:0. On the other hand, Manchester City is on their to end their 35-year trophy drought. Dimitar Berbatov had a number of good chances to put the United ahead in the first half but he couldn't find the way to pass through Hart. Yaya Toure scored for Manchester City after seven of the beginning in the second half after Michael Carrick had misplaced a pass.
Anyway, fight on Manchester United! We still have the Premier League and Champion League to take down.

McDonald's beats Starbucks?

McDonald’s has been capturing American’s stomach for decades, and it seems they are not satisfied. McDonald’s has announced their attack to the “peaceful” coffee market. In the last few years, McDonald’s has tried very hard to change, or indeed add, an image of a hangout place on top of their well-established fast food company image. On the other hand, Starbucks is trying to change too. They are so desperate to sell more food instead of only selling coffee that they even changed their logo by taking off their name Starbucks Coffee for it. Now, the war between McDonald’s and Starbucks heats up.

After looking at Jason Best’s blog post about the loyalty of coffee drinkers, it looks like McDonald’s is a bit ahead of the game. The report shows the coffee drinkers of McDonald’s appear more loyal than Starbucks. Although neither the study nor the post say why McDonald’s coffee drinkers are more loyal, Jason Best implies it is about the price. “The study didn't try to figure out why McDonald's coffee drinkers were more loyal, but the fact that you can still get a basic cup of coffee there for a buck might have something to do with it” (Coffee Drinkers More Loyal to McDonald’s Than Starbucks, SLASHFOOD). After researching on the subject matter, I somewhat agree with Jason. There is no doubt that price matters in this war; on top of that, I found McDonald’s has more advantages than just price.

Since the financial crisis in 2008 and the current economic downturn, a large portion of Starbucks’s market started to look for and purchase the cheaper alternative coffee, McDonald’s. A slight increase of young adults’ average consumption of coffee is recorded from 2007 to 2008. The figure increased from 3.1 cups per day in 2007 to 3.2 cups per day in 2008. The number indicated the growth of Starbucks targeted market was slowing down compared to the previous years. On the other hand, McDonald’s got an edge of the market after they improved their coffee. A large portion of consumers who used to consume luxury coffee now seek for medium quality coffee with lower price.

For the past few years, McDonald’s has been trying to imitate Starbucks to steal their customers. They have operated a new line called McCafe in many countries outside of the States. McCafe’s targeted market overlaps with Starbucks. “This upscale coffee and pastry shop often operates in tandem with the standard McDonald’s restaurant. They share the same entrance, but the McCafe section offers big booth couches, upscale tables, Wi-Fi, and sophisticated curvy room and wall arrangements”( McDonald’s: Breaching the Luxury Coffee Market). This idea has already been very popular in other countries, such as Germany and Australia. With McCafe, McDonald’s may draw the attention of Starbucks’s customers as people are becoming more cost-conscious.

According to a research on “Where they’d rather live, in a place with more McDonalds or more Starbucks” I found on Bloomberg, McDonald’s defeated Starbucks by 43% to 35% overall. In the report, “McDonald’s also is tops in almost every demographic group. Among the few subsets that favor Starbucks: 18- to 29-year-olds, college grads, people with annual incomes of $75,000 or more a year, the nonreligious, Westerners, and liberals” (The Great Divide, Bloomberg).

As we can see from the research, McDonald’s and Starbucks are actually competing on different targeted markets. Although McDonald’s leads an overall 8% over Starbucks, the high income and educated group favors Starbucks. More importantly, the younger generation, which McDonald’s has been targeting for years turns out to be on the Starbucks’s side. The Hitwise data also support the research above. They found the 18-to-34-year-old group tends to buy coffee in Starbucks rather than McDonald’s, and there is a clear income gap between the two companies’ customers as well. Starbucks customers tend to be households earn over $60,000/year; in contrast, most of the McDonalds’s customers are households earn less than $60,000/year. McDonald’s has noticed that, and has been attempting to steal the high income market share of Starbucks by improving their taste.

In a blind taste test, McDonald’s actually beat Starbucks and other competitors on the taste of coffee. The trained tasters of Consumer Reports visited two stores of each company in the test. “We compared the rivals with Starbucks, all in basic black -- no flavors, milk, or sugar -- and you know what? McDonald's beat the rest”, Consumer Reports said in its March issue, It was decent and moderately strong. Although it lacked the subtle top notes needed to make it rise and shine, it had no flaws” (McDonald’s beats Starbucks in coffee smackdown, Chicago Tribune). In 2008, McDonald’s placed 14,000 new baristas and dropping espresso machines in their fast food restaurants to upgrade their coffee, and also to increase customers’ willingness to buy coffee from them. The taste report helps a large part in McDonald’s intention to elute their image of selling cheap coffees. This is an important advantage that could help McDonald’s to steal market share from Starbucks.

Breakfast and drive thru turn out to be advantages of McDonald’s over Starbucks. McDonald’s has a large proportion of their sales relies on their breakfast. Therefore, they try to sell more coffees together with their breakfast, which boosted their coffee’s sales. Starbucks has been trying to do the same thing for the last few years, but the same strategy doesn’t seem to be successful for Starbucks. The reason why people choose McDonald’s breakfast over Starbucks is McDonald’s has higher efficiency. Drive thru has helped McDonald’s a lot on this. The high turnover rate of drive thru favors those who rush to work in the morning, and also parents who need to drive their children to school. It appears to be faster and more convenient for people to grab a fast breakfast through drive thru instead of waiting in Starbucks. However, why don’t Starbucks setup drive thru? The reason is, Starbucks is usually smaller in size compared to McDonald’s, and it is hard for them to setup drive thru in small shops. It also contradicts with Starbucks image as a hangout place, because high turnover rate is not their selling point, instead they want to make it a comfortable place for people to stay and chill.

Now, let’s get back to our topic, do you think McDonald’s will beat Starbucks in the coffee market? In spite of all the advantages of McDonald’s, I would say they will eventually beat Starbucks. However, I still prefer to buy coffee in Starbucks personally. I found out it is so hard to change the fast food restaurant image of McDonald’s in my mind. Therefore, I think they will beat Starbucks later in the future, but not now. What do you think?

Here it comes the NBA playoff 2011!!

According to the prediction from LA Times,The Lakers will win by 4-0.
The Hornets have been a nice story this season. Chris Paul has changed his game since suffering a knee injury last season and has had the Hornets playing well all season. Unfortunately for the Hornets the Lakers are just too much.
The Hornets do not have anybody on their team who can score the way Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol can score for the Lakers. Paul can put up points if he needs to, but if he is the Hornets probably do not have a great shot here.
The Lakers' size up front is just too much for the Hornets to handle. Even if Andrew Bynum is out for a game or two the Lakers should have no problem sliding Lamar Odom into the starting line up and not miss a beat.
This should be a quick series as the Hornets just do not have enough talent to stick with the Lakers.
More Predictions here...

Will Bynum's injury affect the title race of the Lakers???

The Lakers center Andrew Bynum has a bone bruise on his right knee. He was injured in the second quarter of the Lakers' 102-93 victory Tuesday over San Antonio. He stepped on the foot of Spurs center DeJuan Blair while running downcourt to play defense. Bynum left the game but reported feeling better after it ended. An MRI exam Wednesday confirmed the bruise, and the injury was "not deemed to be serious," according to a statement sent out by the Lakers. However, he may miss the first several games of the playoff. Everybody knows Bynum is very important to the Lakers in the title race, so I hope he can recover soon and help the Lakers to win the champion.

Never the Chelsea!

Manchester United won over Chelsea in the second round of their European Championship League game by 2:1agg 3-1.
Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Ji-sung Park, Michael Carrick and company were simply far hungrier than their visitors, whose interest in the season’s grand prizes ended in embarrassing circumstances with the listless Fernando Torres hauled off and Ramires sent off.
It required an admiring glance only at one special cameo to appreciate why United were better, why they utterly deserved victory and a semi-final with Schalke (barring a miracle for Inter Milan).
The game’s defining memory came not from the build-ups to the goals of Javier Hernandez or Park, however fine those moves were; it came with Giggs sliding in on the sluggish Frank Lampard, winning the ball and a standing ovation.

Chelsea started very brightly and were regularly carving the hosts apart with brilliant buildup play. The base of three midfielders held the line, Anelka and Lampard providing the link, and Torres... well, he didn't really do much, and that was the problem. The Blues didn't manage to generate nearly enough chances with him in the game. Lampard should have scored very early on, and Anelka missed twice by a combined distance of about four inches with Edwin van der Sar well beaten...

Save Japan!!

According to the BBC News, the Japan has raised the nuclear crisis rate to the highest, seven, although the Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said radiation leaks at the plant were declining. The aftershocks worsen the situation, the 6.0-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday prompted the plant's operator to evacuate its staff.

Impact of leaks
The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan announced in a statement that the crisis level at the Fukushima Daiichi plant was being raised, adding that it was a preliminary assessment which required further technical evaluation by specialists.
The level seven signifies a "major accident" with "wider consequences" than the previous level, officials say...

Weekend in Vegas!!

I spent the last weekend with my friends from Berkeley to celebrate his 21st birthday! We stayed at Trump, a new five-star hotel, for two nights. We didn't gamble at all, we spent all our time walking around the casinos and having buffets! Also, we went to Club XS in Encore! It was just crazy!! The place is marvelous! We had so much funny!! Once again Happy Birthday to my friend Sandro. =]

Manchester United or Chelsea?? Of Cause the United!!!

Manchester United won over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last week in the European Champions League by 1:0.
Chelsea and United both opted to start the match in a 4-4-2, which makes me wonder what Sir Alex Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti know that I don't. The absence of David Luiz forced Cheslea to field Jose Bosingwa at right back, despite impassioned pleas from WAG community members to play Michael Essien there instead, and Ancelotti instead threw Essien into midfield alongside Frank Lampard. They were opposed by the less than impressive duo of Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick, and so the midfield partnership wasn't too much of a problem.
Bosingwa at right back however was a problem. The Portuguese is an attacking force, but a defensive liability, and it was (surprise) his mistake that led to Rooney's goal, having failed to adequately with a long ball forward from Carrick and allowing United to tear through the defence once Giggs had controlled at the edge of the area. There wasn't a thing Petr Cech, John Terry, or Branislav Ivanovic could have done about the goal - the time to cut it out was when Carrick's pass was in the air, and Bosingwa didn't bother...

Still on the road to the Champion!

The Manchester United overturn the 2-0 deficit and won West Ham by 4-2!!! Thanks to Rooney's hat-trick! The United was down by two because of two penalties. Evra's hand ball cause the first penalty, and United's captain Vidic brought down West Ham's striker and cause the second one; Vidic was sent off due to the foul.
Mark Noble converted the two penalties in the first half for West Ham to seemingly deal the Reds’ title hopes an untimely setback. Given the flow of the first half, it was little surprise to see Sir Alex make a change at half-time, Hernandez coming on in place of Evra, with Giggs moving to left-back. Within 35 seconds of the restart, the Mexican had shown his threat, catching the Hammers' defense on their heels but directing a Giggs cross over the bar with the outside of his boot on the volley.

With 20 minutes elapsed in the second half and Man United making little headway, Berbatov was brought on for Park as Rooney lined up a free-kick 25 yards from goal. In an instant, it was 2-1, the England striker curling the set-piece gloriously over the wall and into the net beyond a despairing dive from Green...

Lakers win ninth straight!!

Los Angeles Lakers came back on the right track after the All-Star Game! They are now having a nine winning streak.
The Los Angeles Lakers came into Salt Lake City on Friday night after a heated contest against the Dallas Mavericks just a day before. With Matt Barnes getting a one-game suspension and emotions running high against the Mavs on Thursday, the Lakers were noticeably tired against the Utah Jazz early in this game at Energy Solutions Arena and were basically dominated by Al Jefferson and company in the first half.
With the Utah Jazz getting out to leads as high as 17 points against the two-time defending champs, the Los Angeles Lakers winning streak looked like it was coming to an end, but in the last few minutes of the second quarter things started to change in the Lakers favor (10-0 run)...

United extended their unbeaten home run against Arsenal to seven games as they sealed their place in the semi finals of this season’s FA Cup with a 2-0 victory.
Goals from Fabio da Silva and Wayne Rooney won the game for the home side and dumped Arsene Wenger’s men out of a third competition in two weeks, leaving them with only the Premier League to concentrate on...

Food contamination...

Can you imagine no sushi from Japan for 300 years? Beacuse of the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi reactors, we are facing a food contamination problem in Japan. Let's go grab some Japanes food before they are all contaminated. =[

Engineers have managed to rig power cables to all six reactors at the Fukushima complex, and restarted a water pump that will help reverse the overheating that triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.
A spokesman for Tepco, the plant operator, said workers had to be briefly evacuated after light grey plume of smoke was spotted emanating from reactor three but added radiation levels had remained stable...

Salute to Fukushima 50!!!!

Since there is a nuclear crisis happening in Japan, 50 brave men decided to secrafice themselves to save the world from nuclear pollution. God bless them, and hope they can sucessfully stop the crisis.

AN elite team of engineers who represent Japan's desperate last line of defence against a nuclear catastrophe was last night making another bid to bring the Fukushima power plant under control.
The skeleton crew of 50 returned to ground zero after white smoke earlier belched from one reactor and fire was doused in another.
Radiation levels at the plant soared to dangerous levels before dropping later in the day.
Authorities fear the containment vessel at the plant's No. 3 reactor has ruptured, spewing radioactive steam into the atmosphere...

Nuclear Crisis after the shake...

Engineers at Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant battled to stop a pool holding spent nuclear fuel from boiling, as fears about contamination spread to the country's seafood industry.

The pool at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan heated up to around boiling point, and with water bubbling away there was a risk that more radioactive steam could spew out.
Nuclear agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama said fuel rods had been partly exposed. He added: "We cannot leave this alone and we must take care of it as quickly as possible." After shipments of spinach and milk from the Fukushima area were halted because of heightened levels of radiation, new tests found elevated levels of radioactive iodine and cesium, in sea water. That prompted the Japanese government to order monitoring of seafood.

Earthquake in California???

After the earthquake and tsunami happened in Japan, I found a friend posted a video about earthquake in California on facebook. In the video, it mentioned that Jim Berkland, the geologist that successfully predicted the 1989 World Series earthquake, predicted there will be a earthquake in California during the period of March 19th-26th.

Disappointed!!!

Liverpool got a 3:1 win over Manchester United...
Liverpool built a 3-0 lead on the back of a Dirk Kuyt hat-trick, eventually defeating Manchester United 3-1. Liverpool is now back to the sixth place of the league, while Manchester United is leading on the top with three points.
Luis Suárez played a great game by creating space and beat the Untied's defenders to create goals! In contrast, Nani unitentionally gave an assit to Kuyt to score his second goal! What a shame!
Later in the first half, Nani was suffered a "very deep gash" in his leg after by Jamie Carragher's tackle, and he was carried off the field on a stretcher and replaced by substitute Javier Hernandez who later scored United's only goal with a header in injury time.

Facebook Addiction

Facebook is a social network website found by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes in February 2004. According to Social Media Today, there are around 600 million active members on Facebook and it is estimated that 41.6% of the U.S. population has a Facebook account as of April 2010.

With the exponentially increasing number of Facebook users, Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD) became one of the hottest topics all over the world recently. FAD is an addiction presented by some psychologists which means people whose lives are highly affected by unrestrained Facebook activities. There are around 350 million people suffering from FAD and the number of patients is increasing in a fast rate. Yet, what makes Facebook so addictive; moreover, does Facebook Addiction even exist?

I believe there are three main reasons that make Facebook so addictive. First, it gives users a sense of self-worth. Facebook gives a platform that allows users to let the world know about their interests, thoughts and bits and pieces about their lives. They can also talk and share anything without the fear of being labeled as self-obsessed. Also, each message and notification makes them feel important and can boost their self-esteem. The second reason is Facebook stalking. Facebook allows users to view and spy on photos and conversations of their friends or even someone they don’t know without other people knowing. Facebook can also help people who are too shy or too busy to meet or call to catch up with their friends. Last but not least, Facebook on mobile phones makes Facebook addictive as well. As more and more people are using smart phones nowadays, Facebook application on mobile makes it easier for users to get access to Facebook. People can update statues and photos whenever and wherever they want. “Almost one fifth of users are now accessing the site through their mobile phones and official statistics suggests that users become on average 50% more active once they do so” (Understanding Facebook Addiction, www.suite101.com).

Now we know Facebook is addictive, however, there is no official medical founding that supports Facebook Addiction. So, to prove whether FAD exists depends on how we define “addiction”. There are commonly two forms of symptoms can be called as “addiction” according to The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and StatisticalManual of Mental Disorders: substance dependence and pathological gambling. Obviously, it is inappropriate to use pathological gambling to judge the existence of FAD, and it is also hard to prove whether Facebook is substance dependent. Therefore, I would like to link it to an official disorder, Internet Disorder. In fact, FAD should be categorized as a kind of Internet Disorder.

In 2008, China registered Internet Addiction as a medical disorder with the World Health Organization. Tao Ran has reached his conclusion by studying 3000 people for four years, and he also set up the first Internet Addiction clinic at Beijing’s Military General Hospital. “Dr. Tao said that he compared his data with that of experts in the United States, where internet addiction is not recognized as a disease. He had determined that an addict spent 6.13 hours online each day, a figure that coincides with the US assessment of 6.14 hours a day. Research by the internet media company InterActiveCorp shows that 42 per cent of Chinese youngsters polled felt addicted to the internet, compared with 18 per cent in the US” (Internet addiction made an official disorder in China, The Times).

Dr. Tao found that Internet Addicts usually also suffer from depression, sleeping disorder and unwillingness to interact with others, which coincidently match with the symptoms of FAD. So, studies support that Facebook Addiction is a form of Internet Addiction.

Facebook addiction can cause depression. A recent study from Edinburgh Napier University says, the more friends you have on Facebook, the higher the chance you will be stressed out. According to Dr. Kathy Charles, the doctor who conducted this research, 32 percent of Facebook users feel guilty when they reject friend requests, and 12 percent of them think Facebook makes them anxious. Many of them feel stressed and anxious because of the exclusion on Facebook community and lack of attractiveness of their pages. Furthermore, some of them even lose sleep, miss meal and school because of FAD. Thus, I think the negative impacts of addiction to Facebook definitely outweigh the benefits of using it.

To prevent yourself from getting too deep into Facebook, you can test yourself to see whether you are addicted to Facebook. Here are five ways from CNN to check if you have FAD. 1. You lose sleep over Facebook. If you're staying up late at night because you're on Facebook, and you're tired the next day, Facebook may be a compulsion for you. 2. You spend more than an hour a day on Facebook. 3. You become obsessed with old loves. Reconnecting with old friends is one of the great attractions of Facebook, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with friending an old boyfriend or girlfriend. 4. You ignore work in favor of Facebook. If you're not doing your job in order to sneak time on Facebook, you could have a real problem. 5. The thought of getting off Facebook leaves you in a cold sweat. Sarah Browne, who writes the Guru of New blog, gave up Facebook for Lent last month when she realized that she had a mild addiction to the site” (Five clues that you are addicted to Facebook, articles.cnn.com).

If you are unfortunately addicted to Facebook, I have some suggestions for you to quit it. The first thing I recommend is to close your Facebook wall. Once your friends can’t post anything on your wall, you don’t have to spend time on responding to the posts or keep checking new wall posts. It is more efficient than disabling email notification. This allows you to cut yourself off from the addiction without having to sacrifice the good communication network of Facebook. If you can’t get rid of your Facebook addiction by closing your wall, you can get a time limiter plugin to help you. The purpose of getting a time limiter is to keep track and control the time you spend on Facebook. Imagine a nanny standing beside you doing nothing, but reminding you to get off Facebook when you exceed the time limit. Sounds Great? If everything else failed, the last thing you can do is to deactivate your Facebook. Totally cut yourself off Facebook and go get a life!

There are many benefits of using Facebook, but moderation is very important. Through Facebook, you can find some of your old friends; you can find business connections; you can chat and keep track on your friends’ life easily, so Facebook is a great social network platform. However, overusing and addiction can offset the benefits you get from Facebook. Thus, try to find your way out as soon as possible when you are addicted to it. Moderate your time on Facebook, and spend more on your real life.
